JULIE DESMARAIS: COURANTS
Oct 2 – Oct 26, 2014
Galerie D’Este is proud to present courants (currents), a solo exhibition of Julie Desmarais’ newest series of landscapes, on at the gallery from October 2 to 26. Pursuing her exploration of nature, Desmarais centers her series on water, symbol of life and purification. The energy that emanates from rushing water lends dynamism to the artist’s contemplative compositions. In her careful selection of settings, Desmarais is guided by the specific feeling of a place that particularly touches her. In this way, the viewer is invited to share a private moment with the artist in her interior world, to follow where she leads. At first glance, the viewer is drawn into the meditative landscape. On approach, the artist’s brushwork, at once precise and loose, captures the attention as a reminder that this is an oil painting. Desmarais’ characteristic plays with light and texture, as well as her sophisticated use of point of view in composition, draw the eye to the foreground to deepen the picture plane.
Raised in the Laurentians, Julie Desmarais has been living and working in Montreal for the last fifteen years. In 1999, she received her bachelor in Fine Art and Art History from University of Montreal. In 2004, she was awarded the Young Artist Prize, as well as a grant and a solo exhibition, by the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Laurentians. Since then, she has participated in several International art fairs as well as group exhibitions. This is her third solo exhibition at Galerie D’Este.
