IVAN MARKOVIC - Beyond the Pale
Jun 1 – Jun 26, 2016
Galerie D’Este is proud to present a solo exhibition by Ivan Markovic. Beyond the Pale is a phrase coined by 17th-century poet John Harington to describe people or situations that transgress the bounds of safety or acceptability. Ivan Markovic takes inspiration from these social pariahs and marginalized people for his third solo exhibition at Galerie D'Este. The artist's contention is that social outcasts are a symptom of an ailing society, revealing the most profound truths and anxieties of any given community. In this new body of work, Ivan Markovic depicts disenfranchised people through another lens, focusing less on the social reality of this phenomenon and more on the metaphorical, symbolic, and poetic aspects of the outsider. The artist utilizes paper in off-white colours, with the occasional warm accent, to create strikingly emotive sculptures, transmitting elements of the human psyche, be it strength or fragility, as also suggesting movement and serving as means to convey body language expressions.
Born in Montreal in 1970, Ivan Markovic holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from Leeds University in England. After living in Madrid for a number of years, splitting time between his artistic production and teaching, Markovic returned to Montreal in 2010, where he now lives and works. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe and figures in many private collections.
